As social workers, our work is rooted in compassion, dignity, and the belief that every person deserves to be seen, supported, and understood. The journey is not always easy. We carry difficult stories, respond to complex needs, and manage the expectations of both the communities we serve and the broader society around us.
Lately, social workers have appeared in the headlines often in ways that do not reflect the full picture of our profession. The stories that reach the public rarely show the positive impact we make or the lives touched through quiet, consistent support. Instead, what surfaces most often are moments of scrutiny, which can overshadow the depth and sincerity of the work we do. Social work is sometimes misunderstood or undervalued, and what is not always visible is the heart that drives our efforts.
Social work is a calling that requires courage, resilience, and deep commitment. We do not show up for praise or recognition. We show up because we care, because our purpose is rooted in service, and because we believe in the possibility of positive change. What keeps us moving forward, especially on the harder days, are the glimmers of hope we encounter along the way.
These glimmers are the small, meaningful moments that remind us why our work matters, a breakthrough during a home visit, a moment of trust in a support session, a grateful word during a follow-up call, or simply witnessing someone take their next step forward. They often happen quietly, but their impact is powerful.
These moments sustain us. They remind us that hope is not passive, it grows through connection, empathy, and the shared strength of the people we serve. Often, the courage and resilience of those we support inspire us more than they know.
There is a quote from Nelson Mandela’s Long Walk to Freedom that my father often shares with me:
“I have taken a moment to rest, to steal a view of the glorious vista that surrounds me, and I dare not linger, for my long walk has not yet ended.”
It is a gentle reminder that even as we pause to acknowledge progress and gather these glimmers of hope, our journey continues, and there is still meaningful work to be done.
I am deeply grateful to be part of a supportive and dedicated social services team at Breede Valley APD. I want to honour the Social Services colleagues who walk this path alongside me, Jurene Horne, Anelda Rabie, Jolene George, Illze van Reenen, and Rozaan Makkamella. Their strength, compassion, and steadfast commitment uplift me daily. Together, we learn, grow, encourage one another, and serve our community with shared purpose.
So, here’s to the social workers who continue to show up with open hearts.
Here’s to the small victories, the quiet moments of progress, and the glimmers of hope that light our way.
And here’s to the belief that every step forward, no matter how modest, has the power to change a life.
